Psych Out Awards 2002 The first annual Psych Out Awards, held on January 14, 2002, was a jubilant celebration of the Institute’s work, and recognized the hundreds of innovators who contribute to the field. Among the 270 guests were friends of awardees, social therapy clients, graduates of the Institute’s training program, and supporters of programs inspired by the Institute’s approach to human development and learning. The evening was an affirmation of the Institute's commitment to therapeutics as a way of life. Founder Fred Newman addressed the stigma attached to therapy, congratulating the awardees for bringing psychology "out of the darkness" and into everyday life. “Psychology has to be a way of life, a way of growing,” said Newman. “That’s at the core of what social therapy stands for, and what we’ve worked to build for 25 years.” The program also included the premiere screening of the video: The East Side Institute: A Center for New Approaches to Human Development and Community. Dinner Chair, Robin Sayetta and Vice Chair, Tom Vasiliades headed fundraising. Under their direction, the Dinner Committee raised $60,000 in ticket sales and gifts.
