When "Mind in Society," a short collection of Lev Vygotsky's writings,was published in 1978, it was a rare psychologist or educator who had heard of Vygotsky, let alone read his work. Today, Vygotsky is nearly a household word, at least among those involved in teacher training or developmental and educational psychology. Moreover, Vygotsky's work figures prominently in a growing number of other fields, including cognitive science, organization and management, curriculum and teaching, literacy, writing and rhetoric, information technology and design, geography, architecture, and museum design and education.
But which Vygotsky? In most cases, it is a Vygotsky who has been assimilated into the dominant model of what it is to be a human being and into the dominant understandings of culture, learning and human
development. That assimilation, however, misses the transformational potential of Vygotsky's thinking.
This conference is for students, professors and practitioners who want to learn how to practice a more radical and more profound Vygotsky. The conveners -- the East Side Institute for Group and Short Term Psychotherapy and the All Stars Project, Inc. -- have produced successful and sustained therapeutic, educational and cultural projects that have much to offer professionals in more traditional programs and institutions. Speakers and workshops leaders include the creators of projects at the Institute and the All Stars, along with colleagues whose research and educational practices are also designed to realize Vygotsky's transformational potential.
The two-day conference will feature plenary sessions and concurrent experiential workshops to choose from:
