YOUNG PEOPLE LEARN BY STUDYING THEMSELVES:
THE ALL STARS TALENT SHOW NETWORK IN ACTION I found this video a most compelling confirmation of how youth intervention projects can benefit the personal development of young people. I saw the video as an animated research paper that reported on the rationale, method, progress and results of the project. In this way it was self-evaluating. There were several strengths to this video that lent credence to the overall project. For example, the project subjected itself to evaluation – on film. But what was more impressive (and risky) was the fact that the evaluators were the young people themselves who scrutinised and challenged the project. And most importantly it was the young people who verbally evaluated the All Stars Talent Show, what it meant to them, how they got into it, what it did for them, how it changed their lives, and the ramifications of their participation on their community, their family and their education. As a qualitative research document it strongly suggests a positive impact of this project on the young people (such as increased confidence, self-esteem and commitment) and their communities (increased cohesiveness a sense of belonging). This points to the value of such schemes on the personal and social development of the young people who take part and the potential to enhance the harmony and environment of the communities they live in.
